Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Dennis Rodman and you!

Posted by Kathy Curry | What Would You Do? | Friday 6 March 2009 12:01 am

We’ve been talking a lot about our first black President Barack Obama and racism and actions that stem from the hatred of racism. I have a scenario. You are walking through the mall with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Dennis Rodman. The three of you are walking, talking and minding your own business when an unidentifiable skinhead comes up and spits on all three of you. I think we can surmise what Dr. King would do and probably assume what Rodman would do. Their history, reputation and actions precede them. But here’s the thing: what would you do?

We would all love for the world to think the best of us, but you know what emotion was invoked just now when you read it, and you know what you would do or what you think you would do. Tell the truth and share with us what an outward, direct, public show of a race provoked demeaning act, such as this one, could and would provoke you to do! Tell us if the morals and Christianity (if you claim to be one) you possess will cause you to turn the other cheek and say Father forgive them. Be honest and tell us: What Would You Do???

Holla back!

Have you ever said, “If I were you I would….”? Well, I sure have been guilty of saying those very words. I have also been gulty of not following through on those very things I said I would/would not do. If I were honest, I think I can just say, I don’t know what I would do until the situation would happen. However, I think Dennis Rodman would handle it for us all!

  2. Kourtney says:

Its hard to say what I would do. However looking at the situation from the outside, I would definately have to say I would go directly into fighting mode. Even if It was a man, and me being a woman. If I could not, then I would turn to the nearest man (probably rodman, not king) and try to talk him in to handling it for me!!! I would be on the side lines doing what I can do too. That is plain nasty and you could be arrested for that.

  3. Karen says:

I would ask Dennis to help me beat the spit out of him and ask Martin to pray that we were successful!! What in the world?!?!?!

  4. Monique Davis says:

I too am uncertain as to what I would do. If he had other skinheads there with him, that would make a big difference. If he was acting alone, me and Dennis would have to restrain him while we sent Martin to go get security and have charges brought on him. The location would also play a very big part. Depending on where you are, the attitudes of those around could range from very volatile to those that don’t want to get involved cause it’s none of their business. I, personally, would at first instinct want to go for the beat down but if I did that I’d probably be the one thrown in jail for assault and battery.

  5. Kathy says:

Yea, this is a hard one. I actually stole this scenario from someone who was talking to me yesterday and in light of current events; I thought this was a great one to start off our “What Would You Do” category. I have never been in a real fight and I would hope to think my Christianity had a strong enough hold that I wouldn’t instantly go into fight mode. To be honest, I would probably start crying and frantically search for a police or SWAT team, whichever I found first, while Dr. King took out his handkerchief to wipe the spittle and began praying and mumbling and speaking words that would probably end up as a best selling speech! I do know, The Lord himself would have to rain down grace and mercy and some longsuffering on me! I also feel, if I wouldn’t fight as a Christian, I shouldn’t ask Dennis to do it for me. I’m sure he is going to take care of himself, but if I ask him to do it for me, I might as well do it myself! Another interesting thing would be to see how the crowd around us – whites, blacks, democrats, republicans – reacted to the situation! I think we might all come together!

  6. Bobby says:

I would knock him out, then help him up,get him a bag of ice, then explain to him how offensive that was.

  7. Kathy says:

lol. I love that! Punish him, help him, and then teach him!

  8. Ronald Deane says:

All I have to say about this scenario is, “I am NOT a passive christian.”

  9. Kathy says:

So you would start laying hands on him and telling him the good news of Christ and aggressively put your Christianity into action!?

  10. Free says:

I am so sorry, I love the lawd, but there is no way I could turn the other cheek. Having someone spit on you is one of the most degrading things you could ever experience. Someone would have to have my bail money ready.

This mess happened to my baby when she was in headstart……she didn’t know any better so she spit back. Her father told her in front of her teacher……don’t spit back…..if that eva happens again pick up a chair and smack them right in the face.

This is how I feel about this.

  11. Kathy says:

@Free – Hi Free! Oh my. You had a strong little headstarter if they could pick up a chair and fight with it! I understand why you would say that. I just always worry about parents teaching their kids to fight so young and then expect them to not turn to violence as their first defense mechanism all throughout life. At some point when they shouldn’t be fighting but do, because it is their learned method of dealing with conflict, and get in big trouble because they are big now; what will your response be when they look at you through bars and say: but you told me to fight when I was three and you never told me when to stop.

Don’t get me wrong, spitting on someone is TERRIBLE but I’m just saying…

  12. Ronald Deane says:

No I would pre-emptively ask for foregiveness, repent and pray that God will rain down His grace and mercy upon me after I KNOCK THAT DUDE OUT! @Kathy -

  13. Kathy says:

uh huh. I kind of thought that is what you meant! lol.

  14. Karlissa says:

Weeeeeelllll I can’t say what I would or wouldn’t do. BUT what I would want to do is slap the taste and saliva out of their mouth so they could not and would not ever do that again. HOLLA!

  15. Tom Sawyer says:

Hmmm, this is a slippery slope. Skinheads are some hateful individuals, but not necessarily the most hateful kind. Skinheads are obvious, but what about the person you come across every day that is hiding the hate?

So he is there right in front of me with his spit running down my face. This would really be a defining moment in my life because something is about to go down! The situation calls for some evaluation because I wouldn’t know if the Skinhead had a weapon or not.

I have to be very calculating as far as what I’m going to do. I wouldn’t say I’m going to beat him down because that would imply me simply using my hands and him having an opportunity to fight back. Oh no, I shalt not be spit upon and fight fair from that point on! A weapon – chair, branch, mannequin’s arm/leg, baseball bat – is going to be involved and pure damage will be done.

Whew, I got kind of dizzy sitting here.

  16. Kathy says:

@Tom Sawyer – Very true about the person hiding hate. I will use this analogy that was an actual discussion at our lunch table this week about a dog vs. a cat. You see a dog bounding towards you. His teeth are showing and he comes with everything exposed. If he is vicious, you see that coming at you. He doesn’t sneak up on you, he comes straight at you. However, a cat walks gingerly towards you and even goes as far as to rub up against you and get cozy with you. The cat is quiet and doesn’t create a scene like a dog. But then, without warning, they attack. You never saw it coming and you never knew they had it in for you! Same with people. At least you see the white sheets and skinheads coming at you. What’s horrible is the catlike, quiet ones rubbing up against you everyday and making you feel comfortable with them only to find they are filled with hate. They are the worst kind.

  17. Kathy Curry says:

I just thought about how bent out of shape I get when somebody accidently spits on me during a conversation, because they are apparently standing too close. I loose focus and can only think about wiping that little unintentional spittle off of me. The only spit I don’t mind and allow on me is my grandson’s. Other than that, it is not good!

  18. Barry Palmore says:

First, let’s look at Dr.King. He would turn the other cheek and wipe it off, walking away singing “We Shall Overcome”. Now, we got Dennis Rodman, his track record is kind of shaky on these types of things. In some kind of weird way, I think he might like it. Then we got me, that’s another story. I could see Dr.King saying “Young man, non- violence is the answer”. Dennis Rodman would say “No, he was just joking, I play this game all the time”! I can honestly say that I don’t know what I would do. But, all that I do know is by time come back to, I’d probably be waking up in jail. I don’t play that kind of stuff. Lord forgive me.

  19. Kathy says:

He’ll forgive you Barry, if you are sincere and turn! (There is a preacher in you, waiting to come out! I will be so glad when you accept it and walk in it!)

  20. LEAH LEE says:

I’d like to think Dr MLK Jr would go into his preachy mode..son, what’s the problem, violence is so unnecessary, can I help you mode.Maybe even try to take him to the side kind of thing. But before that happens, I would like to think Dennis and I had become close enough for him to go in our defense and let all the thug and gangster in him burst out and seriously put a hurtin on him…maybe even call in some thug backup and take him down! All so I could clean my face with a hankie and a smile!!! I’ll even call 911 after we’ve gotten far enough away. Take him down with a sermon!!!

  21. Kathy says:

Leah!!! I thought you would work with Dr. King!

  22. angela morris says:

this is a hard thing to do is let that roll off my back, i want to be likeJESUS ,someday it is so hard to do that, but in the flesh i would take busy with the skinheads. but DR.MLK was a man did’nt put his hands on people like JESUS did they prayed for the mankind

  23. LEAH LEE says:

Kat, you called me out!! That didn’t even come across my mind!I am ashamed of myself…that’s the area I need my healing in!! No she didn’t just call me out!!!!!lol

  24. Kathy says:

@LEAH LEE – lol. Leah you are so funny! You are no different from anyone else and their reaction. But He’ll heal you, if you wanna be healed!

  25. Karol Ann says:

I think I would have to count and pray ………..then act kinda crazy and everyone around would know what the skinhead guy just did. That would be the Christianly thing I could do….no harm to the guy. I probably would be too overwhealmed to even think WWJD!

  26. I have no idea of what I would do, You see, High Yella got me and that was not even spit. I am not sure what the Head Lines would read, I just know I would make them.

  28. Miriam says:

In my younger days I probably would have tried to fight without a second thought about who I was with or whether they would back me up. I have always believed that violence is not the answer to solving any problem, but so may times i have failed when the situation was personal and adrenalin kicked in. If that situation took place today i would wipe my face and look for that unreliable cop;not expecting any justice, except that which Rodman would give me. Forgive me for being pessimistic about my law enforcement protection;I live in Tuscaloosa Alabama.
