You’re Going To Give Me My Evaluation On Speaker Phone?
Here are the facts:
• The review was due in October but wasn’t given until March
• Many requests were made by the employee to have it done (of course, it affects your pay!)
• The supervisor was in the employee’s presence on numerous occasions, thus had ample opportunity to do it at work, in the office, but always had an excuse
In today’s technology driven world, is receiving an annual performance review over the phone acceptable? Does looking directly in someone’s eyes give a clearer picture of what they are really saying and what they really mean? Is conducting an annual review by phone vs. an in person review a sign of laziness on the supervisor’s part? Does doing it this way show a lack of concern for the employee by the supervisor?
Give your thoughts on this matter and let my sister know if you think her feelings are warranted or if she should look at this as a stride in technology and expect more of the same in the future.
Holla back!
Expect more of the same, I also had my evaluation over the speaker phone matter of fact I had to ask him if I was going to have an evaluation. The only reason I asked was because everyone was asking me how did you do on your evaluation. For a moment I thought I had made it, I was now past the point of doing mind numbing assessments of my work when most of the time they already have a directive from management as to the amount of increase they are allowed to give which is normally 3% maybe 3.5%.
So I became pro-active I called HR asked them to send me the evaluation form and filled it out with all the highest scores you could give yourself then I called my manager and set a time to go over my evaluation. He scheduled me in just like a client and we went over the evaluation I had emailed him. I think he was so relieved he didn’t have to do it he gave me a 22% bonus which was the most he could give me at the time. ( One caveat if you make a strong move make sure you can back it up).
The reason people tend to put off chores or assignments is because they really don’t want to do it, just think about it most people don’t have a problem getting up on Saturday to go to a picnic, but have real difficulty getting up on a Saturday to go into work.
So next October when it’s time for your review hold your boss responsible she expect you to accomplish your responsibilies so she should be held accountable for hers’.
If it’s a sign of technology, I wouldn’t be happy with it at all. It’s a very impersonal way of doing something that could have a great affect on a persons career. I would have already had a meeting with the HR director regarding how late she was in giving my review. It also becomes important that they make sure your salary increase is made retroactive from the time it should have been completed and that they give you that increase amount in a check that is separate from your regular paycheck. Otherwise, you’ll get taxed to the hilt and you won’t even be able to get the full benefit of the increase. That money can be used for a sweet vacation or a nice splurge on yourself, or whatever.
It appears as if the supervisor’s next review should include the fact that she’s not organized well enough to do her supervisory duties in a timely manner, therefore, she should she be penalized for that.
Personally, I hate the whole review process. It makes you tense, just thinking about what they’ll say about you and what you have to come up with to say about yourself and how great you are. But if you’ve had an outstanding year, it’s time to bring out your shining moments of last year and your aspirations for the next year. You should also be able to request a face to face review instead of the cold over-the-phone kind. That’s tacky and uncaring!
I have not heard of an evaluation being done this way, but nothing much surprises me now days. I personally wouldnt like it at all. But the most important thing is if the evaluation was a positive one, and will there be pay increase.
You go Bobby, loved every word. It also shows the boss she is not up on her job so why should she give you a bad review unless your work is really bad and if it is that bad maybe you should not be at the job period. I really don’t like them because what they think of you worth and what you think of your worth may be two different things They may even carry a grudge against you and carry it over to your review. Who gives them their review?

I think if your review was going to be bad, she’s a punk. If your review was going to be good, she’s sorry. I don’t know how I would feel if it were good. I guess I would drop down to the bottom line. Did I get my raise? Shoot. Show me the money. Money answereth all things! Glory :0)
I personally have never had an over the phone review but I have certainly had my share of super late reviews. I think the thing that would keep a supervisor in check is for them to get reviewed by the people they supervise! Let’s face it; most times the big boss does not really know what the supervisors do on a day to day. It is the employees, that are supervised, that know the quality of their supervisor.
The job I had where I was always late getting my review, we got our reviews every three months! Her theory was: what if you start going of course after one month? Do you wait 11 more months, for the annual review, to discuss it and put a plan in place? So we had them every three months. Now of course, we didn’t get a raise every three months, just the nerve racking review! We only got the raise annually.
I feel that this was a very sorry and lazy way to give someone their evaluation. I want that person to look me in the eye and tell me what type of job I’m doing. Whether good or bad I want to see the person body language and I want eye contact.
This world is getting so lazy. No one can pick up a phone and talk they rather text or send an e-mail which is really nerve racking. I rather hear your voice then to read a text or an e-mail..
If I show up for work each and every day I feel that the least that my supervisor can do is sit down with me face to face and let me know how well I’m doing at my job as well as any improvements that I need to make.
Thanks for the input. There is so much more to the story but I don’t believe it was about modern technology. These women are something else and tried to make a point. I feel totally disrespected and plan to meet with either the CEO or person right under him to make a complaint.
What point were they trying to make? Please tell us the rest of the story!
Get em Koral Ann!!!! Those SC people aren’t right any way. Just as backwards as all out doors. I know, I’ve experienced them too.
OK, we just recently got a new program manager. She’s young and a butt kisser (excuse me saints)and has a reputation of causing trouble or getting people fired she doesn’t care for. I planned to take time off for the council then Aunt Barbie died so I needed time off. For MONTHS we had no program manager on site – 2 acting ones that came around every now and then. When we needed time off we just worked it out between ourselves, me and my therapist. I handed a written request to the P.M.(program manager) and she told me I had to do it on the computer and I didn’t want to right then so I didn’t and shredded the request with her in the vicinity. It was also on the calendar and she knew that. I went in and worked a few hours and used vacation time to make up for the rest of the day. I got snowed in and wasn’t there until Tuesday and she politely asks me to go across the hall and wants to talk to me so she has papers to write me up for taking vacation and not getting prior approval and I told her I disagreed with being written up and didn’t sign. Did I mention 1 of my coworkers told the PM that she is taking Thursday off…yes 2 days from now and the PM said “OK”. There were things on my review like coming back late from lunch although I worked longer that day but it was 1 ONE time. I think that if there were problems with things I should have been told prior to my review instead of just then…I got a very low merit raise and was told it was due to #’s on review that were 1 – unacceptable. What do y’all think??
wow
I’d be upset even if it was a good review!
